Harry Whittington’s last-gasp goal ensured FCV Academy’s 3-2 win against Mansfield Town in the National League Alliance U19.
It was a near-perfect first-half performance from FCV, who flew out of the blocks to dominate proceedings from the off.
Grant Brown’s side had to be patient for the first goal, but it finally came after half an hour. Forward Sven Hart manufactured a chance for himself and slotted home brilliantly to make it 1-0.
FCV doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. The side’s high pressure strategy paid off as top scorer Whittington pounced on a defensive mistake and turned the ball home.
After the break, Mansfield responded well, putting FCV under a lot of pressure which soon paid off. Two quick-fire goals drew the Stags level, and they were pushing for a winner.
The sides matched each other for the majority of the second period, but with a matter of seconds left, Lewis Saunders launched one final attack from the back. He found T’ai Williams out wide, who delivered a fine cross for Whittington to score, and secure three points.
Next up for FCV Academy is their Central Conference Cup semi-final with Ilkeston, with the winner taking on Brooke House College in the final.
