FCV faced a strong Reading Under-18s side on Wednesday afternoon, doing themselves proud despite falling to a 4-0 defeat.
In what was always going to be an uphill task, the Reading XI included three professional players and were boosted by a strong first-half wind.
Grant Brown’s side started brightly though, and dominated much of the early proceedings. However, a lapse in concentration cost FCV and they found themselves a goal down after 15 minutes.
Two quickfire goals followed before half-time and the Academy were 3-0 behind, but they had every reason to remain positive at the break having created a lot of chances against an impressive opposition.
FCV continued to push for the breakthrough, but were caught out on the break with the Royals adding a fourth goal before the full-time whistle.
Manager Grant Brown and coach Ben Watts reserved special praise for goalkeeper Martin Petkov, full-back Alvin Mugabe, and forward T’ai Williams, but it was a performance the whole team can be pleased with.
FCV continue on their travels over the next couple of weeks with big matches in the Central Conference Cup, the National League Youth Alliance and English Colleges League.
