FCV Academy suffered their first competitive defeat of 2017 when they fell to a 3-1 loss away at league leaders Basford United.
Grant Brown’s side got off to a slow start and succumbed to the early pressure when the home side converted from a 12th-minute corner.
Basford’s advantage was doubled just six minutes later after a fine cross into the Academy box was converted from close range.
That second goal sparked FCV into life, and the side began to create chances of their own.
Richard Abel and Paulo Prato began to control proceedings, feeding the attacking players who in turn caused issues to the opposition defence. This, coupled with fine saves from Charley Giffen, ensured they were still in the game at half-time.
Despite a dominant second-half showing, it took FCV until the 72nd minute to get off the mark. Adam Keal picked out January’s Player of the Month T’ai Williams, and he squared for Harry Whittington to finish.
As Brown’s side pushed for an equaliser, Basford hit the visitors on the counter attack to score and put the game beyond doubt.
The defeat now leaves FCV six points adrift of the National League Under-19 Alliance summit.
