St Ives 2 - 0 FCV Stamford
The opening fixture of the new season saw FCV Academy take a short trip down the A1 play against St. Ives Town.
It was a slow start from both sides which was no shock due to the heat and lots of new faces. The game seemed to pick up when a strike from debutant Alexis Ortega struck the cross bar from 20 yards. FCV came close again when Cole Clinton picked up the ball on the edge of the box before beating his man and getting his shot off at the St. Ives keeper. Milai Perrot was then welcomed into the game by a wayward cross that forced the Bermuda national to track back to tip the ball over the bar.
The first half ended goalless with FCV the better of the two sides. Lots of changes were made throughout the game.
St Ives started the second half on the front foot with the home side coming close to a goal on two occasions within 5 minutes of the restart. St Ives worked the ball into the box and got the shot away which looked goal bound but was blocked by Jesse Kweya. The Kenyan centre back was then involved again making a great last-ditch tackle preventing a certain goal.
The scoring was eventually opened in the 65th minute when a man unmarked headed home the opener for St. Ives. The game seemed to die down for ten minutes with most of the ball in the St. Ives half.
St. Ives then doubled the lead through their number 11 who slotted the ball past Keval Mehta in the FCV goal. With men forward the ball over the top was too much for the FCV defence. St. Ives came close in quick succession but saves and blocks from Keval and the skipper Francesco Chiappo kept them at bay.
The game ended 2-0 to St. Ives. Defender Cole Clinton was awarded Man of the Match for his performance in his first game for FCV.
It was disappointing but also understandable performance that showed nerves but signs of promise for the season to come. FCV Stamford will face LFE Academy in the Midlands U21 League on Saturday.
